Part of Diageos prestigiousSpecial Releases series, the Port Ellen 9th Release is a rare 30-year-old expression from the now-closed Islay distillery. Distilled in 1979 and bottled in 2009, only 5,916 bottles were produced. This elegant, cask-strength release marks a celebrated return to form for Port Ellen’s annual series.
Nose: Subtle, honeyed peat wrapped in dried fruits such as pear and fig, with whispers of antiseptic maritime air, menthol, lemon zest, and soft vanilla.
Palate: Intensely citrus-driven with sweet ash and smoky undertones. Expect bright lemons and oranges, light dryness, and a peppery lift. Dilution emphasizes the citrus while retaining balance.
Finish: Medium-long and graceful: honey and ashy smoke linger, slowly giving way to toasted tobacco leaf richness.
Released in 2009, this bottling remains one of Port Ellens most coveted vintage expressions. Its cask strength of 57,7% ABV and limited run make it particularly attractive to collectors and enthusiasts of closed-distillery whiskies.
