Confessions of a White Glove Chaser: The Story Behind the Bottles (20212024)
It began in 2021, high on the Helderberg slopes, where vines dig deep and the sea hums just out of sight. A red wine called Engelesig started to take shape. It was a quiet kind of beginningwatched over by the mountains, shaped by wind, and stirred by music drifting from the nearby home of South African legend Lesley Rae Dowling.
Engelesig means angel-vinegar. Odd name for a wine, but maybe thats the pointthis wasn’t about being perfect. It was about something else entirely: a feeling, a place, and the quiet conviction that the first bottle can still be the best-kept secret.
By 2022, the story shiftedstill on the Helderberg, but with a bit more mischief.
First came My Koffer. A suitcase full of memories. Old, battered, maybe even slightly romanticizedbut packed tight with the feeling of being young, free, and in love with something you couldnt quite name. It wasnt nostalgia for its own sake. It was about chasing that flash of something once familiarand bringing it back.
Then came the confession.
That same year, Confessions of a White Glove Chaser was born. The name is the story: back in 2013, with no budget and no consultant, Pieter Walser followed the white-gloved pickersthe ones hired by the big names. Wherever they harvested, he showed up too. Mind if I buy grapes from just over there? It was gutsy. Maybe a bit cheeky. But it worked. This wine is the memory of that hustlefinally bottled.
By 2023, the wind picked up.
On a blistering harvest day, a breeze blew in from False Bay and turned everything around. That momentquick, clean, unforgettablebecame Seelug. It means sea air. Nothing more needs saying.
But the year wasnt done making waves.
The Empire Strikes Back arrived later that seasona white wine with a chip on its shoulder and something to prove. It wasnt about ego. It was about place. A love letter (and a bit of a challenge) from Stellenbosch to the Swartland. No shouting. Just action.
Then came 2024: a year for thinking. Slowing down. Making sense of things.
Orbitofrontal Cortex came first. That part of the brain where decisions happen. A wine built to make you pause. Not for show, not for performance. Just to ask you: what do you notice? What do you remember? What makes you go back for another sip?
Its companion was Luuksthe Afrikaans word for luxury. But not the kind you show off. The kind thats quiet. Thoughtful. Earned. A single vineyard. A single statement. One you feel more than you describe.
So here they are: bottles that tell stories.
From 2021 to 2024, this has never been about tasting notes or textbook styles. Its been about moments.
About land and longing.
About bold moves and quiet truths.
About chasing what mattersand sometimes, what doesnt.
