This expression from Ledaig (the peated side of Tobermory Distillery, Isle of Mull) is matured for 19 years and then finished in Marsala wine casks, merging the smoky, maritime spirit with fortified wine influence. It is presented as a small batch release, bottled at 51% ABV. The Marsala finish adds layers of dried fruit, nuttiness, and wine character, softening and complementing the peat.
Colour: Deep golden amber, reflecting rich wood and wine influence.
Nose: Rich and layered: initial aromas of dark berries, black cherry, and raisin, with smoky peat, leather, and a musty book-leather character. As it opens, hints of dried figs, nutmeg, and a touch of vineyard earth emerge.
Palate: Full and assertive. Peat smoke and brine lead, intertwined with stewed red fruits, fig, cherry preserve, and nutty Marsala notes. Beneath that, malt, oak spice, and a thread of cocoa or dark chocolate emerge.
Finish: Long, warming, and complex. Smoke lingers alongside dried fruit, oak, and a saline edge. The Marsala influence gives a wine-like dryness on the tail, balancing richness with tension.
