Wild Turkey Rare Breed is one of the great American barrel-proof bourbonsbottled straight from the barrel without dilution, preserving all the natural intensity and richness of Kentucky whiskey. This specific release, Batch W-T-01-99, comes from the Austin Nichols era (before the rebrand under Campari), making it a collectible as well as a powerhouse of flavour. Rare Breed is a marriage of 6-, 8-, and 12-year-old bourbons, crafted under the supervision of Jimmy Russell, the Buddha of Bourbon, who guided Wild Turkey for decades.
Colour: Deep amber with flashes of mahogany.
Nose: Aromas of rich caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, and dark honey, layered with baking spice, tobacco leaf, and a touch of orange zest.
Palate: Full-bodied and bold. Waves of toffee, butterscotch, maple, and cinnamon bark come first, followed by peppery oak spice, roasted nuts, and a leathery depth. The barrel proof strength (54.2% ABV) delivers warmth without being harsh, balancing sweetness and spice beautifully.
Finish: Long, warming, and robust. Lingering notes of charred oak, clove, vanilla cream, and sweet tobacco with a subtle peppery kick.
This Austin Nichols era Rare Breed (Batch W-T-01-99) is prized among collectors for its vintage packaging and higher age profile compared to many modern barrel proofs. While current Rare Breed releases remain popular, these earlier bottlings are increasingly scarce, making them highly desirable for enthusiasts of Kentucky heritage bourbon.
